    Cal Teach

The following is from the CalTeach web site at http://www.calteach.com. The California Center for Teaching Careers (CalTeach) is a one-stop information and referral service for individuals considering or pursuing teaching careers. CalTeach's mission is to: develop and distribute statewide public service announcements; develop and distribute effective recruitment publications; create a referral database for qualified teachers seeking public school employment; provide information to prospective teachers regarding requirements for obtaining a teaching credential and/or admission to and enrollment in conventional and alternative teacher preparation programs; and develop and conduct outreach to high school and college students. CalTeach implements its mission by using an aggressive public outreach program, sophisticated yet accessible technology tools and strong collaborative connections with other teacher preparation advocates. CalTeach produces a newsletter, hosts an interactive web site, sponsors a telephone helpline and distributes a steady stream of advertisements, brochures and videos. All are designed to make both Californians and people nationally aware of teaching as a valued, rewarding career that is vitally important to California's future.

    TEACHERS FOR TOMORROW

Teachers for Tomorrow is the first step in a three-part program, leading into the undergraduate Junior Math/Science Education Program, and then on to the UCLA Graduate School of Education's Master of Arts in Education/Teaching Credential Program. Participating in the Teachers for Tomorrow program will tie you into a network of programs which can support you through your bachelor's degree and help prepare you for application and admission to the joint Masters/Teaching Credential Program in the UCLA Graduate School of Education's Center X. This fall, 12 undergraduates will be selected for the first Teachers for Tomorrow cohort. These students will participate in a series of faculty roundtable discussions on education, work as interns for the Achievement Council (an educational equity advocacy organization) and gain hands-on experience volunteering at local public schools. In order to lessen the hours students may have to work and make time for the activities of the program, each will receive a $3,000 scholarship, funded through the generosity of the Joseph Drown Foundation. If you have questions, contact Vivian Salazar at (310) 206-1557 or stop by 1227 Campbell Hall.

    TEACH FOR AMERICA

Teach for America is the national teacher corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors and cultural backgrounds who commit two years to teach in under-resourced urban and rural public schools. Each year about 1,000 corps members reach more than 100,000 students. Corps members were leaders on their college campuses, are leaders in their classrooms, schools and communities, and will be lifelong leaders in the pursuit of educational excellence for all children. The Math and Science Initiative provides an intensive five-week training program and a summer internships with sponsoring organizations. No education coursework is required. In the past, corps members have worked on satellite programs at NASA, in drug development projects at Bristol-Myers Squibb, and with high school students at a biotech laboratory at the Boston University School of Medicine. THE DIVERSIFIED LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAM (DLAP)

The Diversifed Liberal Arts Program is not a major, but a special certificate program through which you may waive the Multisubject Assessment for Teachers (MSAT) in California. The MSAT examination must be passed (or the DLAP completed) before students in elementary school teaching credential programs may begin their student teaching. To earn an elementary school teaching credential, you must complete an accredited program offered through a graduate school of education. To earn the certificate in diversified liberal arts, you must complete a major in the College of Letters and Science. You must also complete DLAP requirements in four areas: (1) language and literature, (2) mathematics and science, (3) history and social science, (4) arts and culture. Requirements for one of these areas are normally satisfied by courses taken for your major; in addition, you must complete a pattern of courses in specified areas. You must petition for admission to the program and are advised to do so as soon as possible. Transfer students may petition to have suitable courses completed at other institutions applied toward the course requirements of this program. The college certifies completion of the program. If you do not complete the program prior to graduation, you must petition out of the program to be eligible to graduate. For further information about the program and a complete list of courses that apply, contact a counselor in the College of Letters and Science, A316 Murphy Hall (310-206-6681). For information regarding the Teacher Credential Program in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, see a counselor in 1009 Moore Hall (310-825-8328).
