PLANT BIOLOGY covers the study of plants at the organismic
as well as the molecular level. Courses of study include plant
physiology, molecular/cellular plant biology, plant evolution,
and California ecosystems. Plant Biology majors participate
in field study, which may be the field or marine biology quarter
or an internship that involves laboratory experience. Our many
resources on and off campus for students interested in plants
include the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Gardens, which maintains
one of the most important living botanical collections in the
United States, boasting plant specimens from all over the world.
The seven-acre garden is frost-free and therefore can exhibit many
different species of tropical and subtropical plants. Approximately
5000 species in 225 families are growing there outdoors. Also near
UCLA is Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve. Located in
the Cold Creek watershed of Malibu Creek, the reserve is perhaps
the most pristine and biologically diverse watershed in the Santa
Monica Mountains. Primary habitats include chaparral, coast live
oak woodland, and annual grasslands. More than 300 vascular plant
species are represented, including the state-endangered Pentachaeta
lyonii, a rare member of the sunflower family. There are many
opportunities for Plant Biology majors to do research and gain
hands-on experience both on and off campus to prepare them for
graduate study, professional school or field science.
